Damian Gorman's verse documentary on the Troubles Devices of Detatchment was described by critic Sean-Day Lewis as ‘a television masterpiece’ when first broadcast in 1992. Since then it has received a number of network screenings across the United States on PBS, and has had sold-out anniversary screenings in Northern Ireland. Filmed by avid Barker and directed by Hugh Thomson, Devices of Detatchment uses archive, interview and poetic narrative to look at the role of 'ordinary' people– non-combatants – during the conflict, and its effects on them. Hailed as 'ground-breaking', 'important' and 'full of insight and heart', this is a welcome opportunity to look again at a film selected as one of the 12 best documentaries made for public service television in 1992.
